The Marketing Plan Presentation…..Mike Hogan
At the National Convention in Kansas Mike made several marketing presentations. There were two things that he said that every club or organization should have so that people will know how to contact someone about square dancing….
A WEBSITE AND A TELEPHONE NUMBER LISTED IN THE PHONE BOOK UNDER “SQUARE DANCE”
HE ALSO SUGGESTED THAT WHEN YOU DO A DEMO
HAVE PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE DRESSED IN STREET CLOTHES WHO MAKE REMARKS LIKE “THAT LOOKS LIKE FUN” AND ENTHUASTICALLY JOIN IN WHEN VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUESTED FROM THE AUDIENCE. ALSO, HAVE A SIGN SAYING HOW THE GROUP CAN BE CONTACTED AND GIVE CARDS OR FLYERS TO THE AUDIENCE TELLING TIMES AND DATES FOR NEXT BEGINNERS ACTIVITY.
2005 We struggled to get more than one square on the floor.
2006 Faced with a choice of grow or die, we hoped to get one square for lessons.
We had a class of 43. We tripled the size of the club.
2007 Was the first time luck? Challenged to prove we could do it again, we had a class of 61. We doubled the size of the club. And we also had a second smaller class of 16.
2008 We consolidated our gains with workshops and refreshers to retain our new members
2009 Armed with a detailed plan, we stopped recruiting six weeks before the start of class because we had too many prospects. Our class size was 42.
90% of the dancers who started lessons have become members.
The Hey Lollies in Huston, Texas have been a large successful, couples plus club since the mid sixties. They use basically the same recruiting plan as the Timberline Toppers with a big party in the fall to kick off lessons. Their lessons are mainstream and then plus. They usually graduate twenty-five couples. Since their club and graduating class are so large they usually rely mainly on word of mouth for their advertising for lessons. The caller who teaches lessons asks each student to recruit their friends. Click here for the Hey Lollies Invitation to their Fun Night
The couple from the Hey Lollies also sent a book mark and flyer that the Houston Square & Round Dance Council publishes and distributes a flyer to promote square dancing. The Council also do many other things to promote square dancing in the Houston area.
Callerlab.org also has a book of success stories called “Winning Ways”. Go to their website and put Winning Ways into their search engine. Download the 52 page booklet.
